"Gangnam Style" syndrome is reaching new heights as Psy earns his fourth week at No. 1 on the K-Pop Hot 100 Chart. This feat puts him one step closer to tying the record for most weeks at No. 1; a title currently owned by IU's "You and I" with five weeks atop the chart.
Psy's chances look good as he continues to garner buzz domestically and internationally. Notably, the music video was broadcasted on France's "7:45" program introduced as the "addictive and comedic horseback riding dance that is dominating the world." Billboard also reported that Justin Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, could potentially be meeting with the silly superstar when he visits America this week. The fervor is definitely translating to Korean fans as well as Psy earns yet another week atop the chart.
The excitement keeps growing for Psy who is being sure to capitalize on the success of his monster hit. He just released a new version of "Gangnam Style" sharing the track with 4Minute's Hyun-a with "Oppa Is Just My Style" that has already racked up over 11 million views. Psy also held a special guerilla performance for this week's broadcast of music show SBS "Inkigayo." Psy set up a live performance in the streets of Gangnam creating a truly unforgettable performance. One can get a sense of how popular the song is with fans shouting along to the lyrics and screaming when Psy breaks out his the now-signature horseback riding move. The performance is all the more remarkable when you take into account how many fans were in attendance despite rain and the fact it was announced just hours before filming.
The super popular Super Junior earns a Top 20 hit with their latest release "Spy" moving from No. 24 to No. 20. The song is the lead single for a repackaged version of their sixth album. The track, which is based around the famous James Bond "007" theme song, is said to tell the story of the hilarious chase men go through in order to catch the girls they want. The song jumps between having a fun, nostalgic feel on the hook as well as a futuristic monotone delivery on the verses.
The accompanying music video is equally remarkable as it brings the spy motif to life. The boys look sharp as they perform flawless choreography in formal wear. Super Junior's music videos are forces to be reckoned with on YouTube with their visuals holding some of the largest views for boy band K-pop. Just look at singles "Mr. Simple" (51 million views), "BONANAMA" (41 million), and "SORRY SORRY" (39 million). "Spy" has racked up almost 4 million in a week and could very well be on its way to another popular video for the established idol group.
This week's Top 10 looks remarkably similar to last week's chart with only one new entry (Psy's "What Should Have Been" featuring Lena Park rises to No. 9 from No. 11) as familiar faces SISTAR, Davichi, 2NE1, and T-ara all stay within the Top 10 with their hit singles. BoA's comeback single "Only One" hits its peak at the No. 2 position. She currently poses the biggest threat for spoiling Psy earning a record-breaking fifth week at No. 1 as she continues to deliver with her live performances most recently collaborating with SHINee member Taemin and Super Junor's Eunhyuk for the must-see choreography-heavy "Only One" live performances.
